If your Roomba® Max 700 Series is showing Error 517 or saying "Please empty the tray and dirty water bin and place it back on the dock", it may be caused by clogs, blockages, or residue build-up in the pad washing basin, duct vent, or dirty water bin. You may notice:
- The water is not draining
- The dirty water bin does not fit back in
- Dirty water left behind after cleaning
Roomba® Max 705 Series
Please ensure that both nozzles near the dock's charging contacts have gray rubber seals installed correctly.
Follow these maintenance steps to resolve the issue:
How to Clean the Pad Washing Basin
1. Remove the pad washing plate and wipe out the pad washing basin with a clean, dry cloth. Mild soap and a sponge may be used for stubborn debris.
2. Remove the robot's dirty water bin. Empty it out and clean it. Check for any clogs.
How to Remove and Clean the Dirty Water Bin
1. Press down on the release button to remove the dirty water bin.
2. Press in on the same release button to open and lift the dirty water bin lid.
3. Remove the black rubber stopper attached to a pipe from inside the dirty water bin to clean the inner tubing.
NOTE:
- Wipe the black rubber stopper to ensure it is dry. Remove the black rubber stopper from inside the dirty water bin by pulling the stopper from the bottom. Clean the inner tubing.
- The black rubber stopper should be able to open enough to allow water through. If it is sealed completely shut or clogged, the robot could have trouble emptying its dirty water bin into the dirty water dock tank. Please squeeze the X in both directions to ensure it can open slightly to allow water through.

4. Use a pipe cleaner to clear blockages by inserting it into the pipe and cleaning out all crevices. Flush the pipe opening with faucet water until it rushes freely out the back of the bin. Rinse and reinstall. Cleaning the pipe will prevent suction loss and padwash overflow (especially with pet hair).
5. Clean out the dirty water bin and tubing by rinsing under water and wiping away the residue.
6. Return the black rubber stopper.
7. Rinse and wipe away residue from the top surface of the dirty water bin.
8. Wipe away any residue from the robot's undercarriage. This area must be clear of residue to ensure the dirty water bin slides back into the robot properly.
9. Reinsert the dirty water bin into the robot.
NOTE: Please ensure you are using only water or approved cleaning solutions. Unapproved cleaning solutions may clog the overflow basin with soapy residue.
Roomba® Max 770-779 Series
Follow these maintenance steps to resolve the issue:
How to Clean the Pad Washing Basin

- Remove the robot's dirty water bin. Empty it out and clean it. Check for any clogs.
How to Remove and Clean the Dirty Water Bin
- Press down on the release button to remove the dirty water bin.
- Press in on the same release button to open and lift the dirty water bin lid.
- Remove the black rubber stopper from inside the dirty water bin to clean the inner tubing leading to the drip tray.
- Clean out the dirty water bin and tubing by rinsing under water and wiping away the residue.
- Return the black rubber stopper.
- Rinse and wipe away residue from the top surface of the dirty water bin.
- Wipe away residue from the undercarriage of the robot. This area must be clear of residue to ensure the dirty water bin slides back into the robot properly.
- Reinsert the dirty water bin back into the robot.
NOTE: Please ensure you are using only water or approved cleaning solutions. Unapproved cleaning solutions may clog the overflow basin with soapy residue.
