Charging on the Home Base®
At the end of a cleaning job or when the battery is running low, your robot returns to the Home Base® to recharge. When it has docked successfully, the Home Base® power indicator illuminates solid green for approximately four (4) seconds, and the
battery indicator begins pulsing to signal that it is charging.
Sometimes it can take up to 30 seconds for the robot to wake up if it has been fully drained.
-
If Roomba® is returning to recharge after completing a cleaning cycle, it will play a series of tones to indicate successful completion of the cleaning cycle.
-
If Roomba® is returning to recharge in the middle of a cleaning cycle, it will not play a tone as it docks, and its CLEAN button will pulse with the battery indicator. The iRobot® HOME App will also display the robot's current status.
If desired, you can also send Roomba® to its Home Base® manually by pressing
Dock on Roomba or by pressing CLEAN on the main screen of the iRobot® HOME App and then ending the job.
Note:
-
If you pick up Roomba® and manually move it to another location, it may have difficulty finding its Home Base®. For best results, allow Roomba® to complete its cleaning cycle without interruption.
-
If Roomba® appears to have trouble docking, please refer to positioning the Home Base to ensure the Home Base® has been installed in an optimal location.
-
Roomba won’t leave the Home Base® for a cleaning cycle if its bin is full. In this case, remove and empty the bin, then reinsert it before starting or resuming a cleaning cycle (see Bin Care Procedure for instructions).
Charging
Store Roomba® on the Home Base® so it’s always charged and ready to clean when you need it. Charging time under normal conditions is at least two (2) hours. For best results, only use the iRobot® Lithium Ion Battery that comes with your Roomba®. Visit Authentic iRobot® Lithium Ion Battery for additional details.
iRobot® HOME App Battery Status
You can easily check the status of the battery in the iRobot® HOME App.
-
A battery icon will be displayed in the top-right corner, indicating the current status of the battery.
-
The CLEAN screen will display “Ready to clean. Charging,” indicating that the battery is not yet fully charged. Roomba® may run shorter than expected.
-
The CLEAN screen will display “Ready to clean. Fully charged,” indicating that the battery is fully charged. Roomba® is ready to perform a cleaning cycle.
Reduced Power Standby Mode
Roomba® consumes a small amount of power any time it is on the Home Base® to ensure that it is ready for its next cleaning job as well as to maintain Wi-Fi connectivity. It is possible to put Roomba® in a further-reduced power state when not in use. For instructions and more details on this Reduced Power Standby Mode, refer to the iRobot® HOME App and navigate to

Battery Charging Overview
For details on how the robot behaves while charging, visit Battery Charging Overview.
Roomba ships with a partially charged iRobot® Lithium Ion Battery. If you press CLEAN after the initial setup, Roomba will begin a cleaning job but will most likely need to return to the Home Base® to recharge the battery after a short time. The amount of time will vary based on the battery charge and floor type, but you can expect a longer run time with a fully charged battery. If the runtime is short with a fully charged battery, please visit short battery runtime to resolve this issue.
Confirm you are using an authentic iRobot® Lithium Ion Battery
At the end of a cleaning job or when the battery is low, your robot returns to the Home Base® to recharge. When Roomba® has docked successfully, the
battery indicator begins pulsing to signal that it is charging. After one (1) minute, the battery indicator light will go out as the robot continues to charge. If Roomba® does not charge, please visit does not turn on or does not charge
With a fully charged battery, initial runtime should be between 60-120 minutes. Runtimes can vary based on environment and cleaning preference. Please note that Roomba® may run slightly less than this when on thick carpet. The runtime after the 90-minute mid-mission recharge will be shorter.
If Roomba® is experiencing short runtime between charges, try turning Power Boost settings to Eco-Mode. Use the iRobot® HOME App and select
Cleaning Preferences ➔ Power Boost ➔ Eco-Mode.
Note: Power Boost is available on select models.
Use the following procedure to test the runtime:
-
Charge the battery for at least three (3) hours.
Note: You may need to press CLEAN to display the battery indicator.
-
Unplug the Home Base®, and press CLEAN to run Roomba®. Note the time it takes for the robot to end with a 4-tone dead battery song, or “Please charge Roomba®” message. You may need to run several cleaning jobs to fully drain the battery.
-
As the battery ages, runtimes will decrease. You may need a new battery if:
- Runtime is under 30 minutes on thick carpet with Power Boost set to “automatic” or “performance” mode.
- Runtime is under 60 minutes on other floor surfaces.
- If battery runtime meets the expectations above, you may be experiencing short runtime due to poor coverage
If runtime does not improve, please contact iRobot Customer Care.
Robot models, Home Base® and Clean Base™ that are equipped with energy-saving features turn off their indicator lights while charging in order to conserve energy.
This will happen every time that your robot docks on the Home Base® or Clean Base™: the power indicator on the Home Base® turns on for approximately four (4) seconds and then goes out. At the same time, your robot’s charging indicators will light up, and then, within a minute, all indicators on your robot will go off as well.
To check whether the battery is still charging or fully charged, press CLEAN once and observe the battery status indicator. Battery status and charging indicators are different for different series and different models, so it is best to learn about the battery status indicators specific to your robot’s series to understand your robot’s charging behavior.
The Clean Base™ LED will not turn on until your robot is placed on the base. You'll need to verify power to the base by removing the bag from the base. The Red LED will light up.
If you don’t see any lights indicating your robot’s battery status after pressing the CLEAN button, please visit My Roomba is not turning on or is not charging and perform troubleshooting.
